About Us

Godsell Farm is owned and operated by Mark and Pam Godsell. Together they have been crafting, recycling, and caring for the many rescued animals for over 10 years. The mission at Godsell Farm is to educate those interested in learning about farm life before technology took over and the humane treatment of animals, all the while making it a fun and enjoyable experience for all ages. A trip to the farm gives hands on demonstrations for young and old alike. Whether you are interested in blacksmithing or feeding all of the animals, Godsell Farm is sure to create a memorable experience to last a lifetime! Let us "agri-tain" you!

What is CSA

What is a CSA?

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. A CSA consists of a cooperative between farmers and consumers. Consumers, known as shareholders or members, provide enough money in early spring to meet the farms operating expenses for the upcoming season. In exchange, the members receive a portion of the farms produce each week throughout the season. Your involvement in a CSA provides you more than just fresh produce-it's an investment in your community, an experience that allows you to connect to your food, the land, and those who tend the soil. CSA farms engage their members in agriculture through newsletters, harvest days, and farm celebrations. Throughout the season, members get to know the farmers who grow their food and learn how that food is grown. The CSA season The CSA summer season is approximatley 20 weeks long, and will run from mid -March-through October. We offer full shares, half shares, egg shares, as well as fresh chickens, turkeys, pork and soon, beef products.* The full share is $500 picked up each weekA half share is $250 picked up each weekEgg shares are available for $60 for two dozen farm fresh eggs every other week, or one dozen every week for a total of twenty dozen eggs throughout the season*Poultry, pork and beef products are available seasonallyWe will begin taking applications for new shares for the 2012 season in the next few weeks. FAQs

Do you spray your crops or use pesiticides on the vegetables or inject your meat products?We follow organic farming practices and never use peticides on our vegetables or inject our chickens, turkeys, pigs or cows with any antibotics or unnatural products. Our animals are treated humanely, with love and respect.What happens if there is crop failure or bad weather? How does this affect my share?When extreme weather is happening, crops are most likely affected. Your share may look a little scarce until the farms have a chance to recover, and crops come back to life. When you join a CSA, you also take the risk along with the farmers that crops sometimes fail due to harsh weather. Remember too that you will also share in the bounty when the crops are doing well. Sometimes crops are completely destroyed, and sometimes farms can replant and start over. You may not get specific items in your share during a bad weather period, although we try to plan each season very carefully. Sometimes Mother Nature has her own ideas. We may have to postpone a few deliveries during the CSA season due to extreme weather if necessary or the season may start a week or two later than anticipated, depending on the winter, the length and temperatures of the spring, late frosts, and heavy spring rains which may prevent us from getting into the fields as early as we would like. What are my share options?We offer a full share and a half share, which is a pick up every week for 20 weeks. We also offer a 20 week egg share. You can also opt to do a work share for your vegetable share. All shares are limited and are on a first come first serve basis. What is a Work Share?A work share is just that, you agree to work 5 hours per week to help tend the gardens or help out on the farm in some way in exchange for paying for your share. The amount of work shares is limited per season so if you are interested contact us early!How big are the shares; how many people can one share feed?You will be given a reusable grocery bag filled with vegetables each week. We like to make sure that there is a sufficent amount of each vegetable included for at least a family of four if not more. The shares will start off smaller and include more leafy greens initally and as the season progresses you will see a greater variety of items each week. Some of the favorites are beans and peas, lettuce, cabbage, beets, squash, cucumbers, and tomatoes but we also like to introduce our shareholders to lesser known vegetables through out the searson as well. What are my responsibilities as a CSA shareholder?When you sign up for a membership with the CSA program, you are responsible for picking up your share within a resonable time of it becoming availible. You will receive weekly emails announcing that the shares are ready for pick up and any special instructions for pick up along with family recipes. Your bag will be labeled in the fridge and you just need to drop off your bag from the previous week and take your full one to enjoy!What if I am unable to or forget to pick up my share?Please contact us as soon as possible if you know your will not be able to pick up a share. We cannot credit you if you are unable to make a share pick up but we welcome you to invite a relative or friend to pick up your share for you if you are unable. We understand that you may not be able to make it the first day the shares are available and wel will hold them for you for a reasonable amount of time before we utilize the vegetables elsewhere. Can we visit the farm?We would love for you to come out and visit with us and see where your produce is coming from. We are very proud of our new government funded agriculture project in which we utilize high-tunnel hoop houses to produce vegetables through out the year. We will try to plan an event for our shareholders each season. If you would like to visit the farm at another time contact us and we can set up a tour for you!

Is there anything more fun than a party?Not if it’s at Godsell Farm!Godsell Farm offers a variety of party packages to meet your needs. You can meet & greet all of the animals big and small, go on a hayride, temporary tatoos, hands on demonstrations and activities based on your needs and the ages of party goers. Then relax in our log cabin with your party treats! Book your party plans now!

Field Trips

Here at Godsell Farm we offer a wide range of ways for you to experience life on the farm. We offer "fun tours" for younger age school groups that gives children the farm experience on their level. A favorite time for many younger age groups is in the spring when new births are abundent and in the fall when pumpkins, hayrides and our child size maze is available.We also offer an Educational Presentation for either private parties or school or group field trips. During this presentation a hands on educational experience will be given to each group showing how our farm operates on a daily and seasonal basis. Visitors can participate in working the hand turned equipment, watch how metal can be fired, bent, and hammered into working tools and works of art through blacksmithing. You can tour the log cabin, churn butter, see how broom corn is made into functional brooms and then relax and take a break in our picnic and bonfire area. We also offer basic farm tours where you can come and visit with our large assortment of friendly animals. They are here just waiting for your group to come feed and pet them! Baby animals are born on the farm on a regular basis during the spring and summer months.

Godsell Farms special events are:in the Spring when the Easter Bunny arrives for photos and visits with new arrivals on the farmin the Fall when we are open weekends in October - admission includes a small pumpkin (larger pumpkins also available), hayride, feed for the animals, marsh trail and unlimited time on the farm for $6 per person, non-walkers are freecooking demonstrations by local restraurantsat Christmas time for photos with Santa in the Log Cabin-by appointment so there are no lines, no crowds! We offer fertile eggs for use in the classroom to hatch out baby chicks as part of their science curriculum.

Fall Vegetable and Sausage Soup

2 Sausages (feel free to add more to make it meatier)1 Bottle of Beer, optional (I used Lakefront Dark, but any neutral dark beer would do)2 Tbl Garlic, minced1 Onion, diced1 Butternut squash, medium sized, peeled, de-seeded and diced1 Rutabaga, peeled and diced2 Red potatoes, medium sized, scrubbed and diced (unpeeled)1 Sweet potato, small, scrubbed and diced (unpeeled)2 Tomatoes, diced (or one can of diced tomatoes, juices included)3 Cups stock/broth (any kind will do, but I would recommend chicken or vegetable)1 Bunch of Chard, or a couple handfuls of spinach1 Tbl Lemon juice1 tsp Salt 1 tsp Oregano, dried1/2 tsp Black pepper1/2 tsp Sage, rubbed1/2 tsp Caraway seedDash Cayenne pepper or red pepper flakesHeat a thin layer of oil in a saute pan and brown sausage on all sides over medium high heat. Add beer and allow it to reduce until the foam subsides and starts to look slightly thick. Meanwhile, heat some oil in a large saucepan. Add squash and saute until starting to brown. Add onions and diced chard stems (if using), cook until translucent. Add stock, reduced beer (minus sausage), garlic, tomatoes and root vegetables*. Bring to boil, reduce to simmer and cook until vegetables are tender. Meanwhile, slice sausage into bite-size pieces and add to soup. Add chard and cook until wilted. Add lemon juice and seasonings, adjusting to taste. Garnish with grated parmesan or romano cheese.* Root vegetables may be boiled or roasted until fork tender separately to speed the process. If so, add chard when stock begins to simmer.
